In most school classrooms, they can't. But it's up to the school, and often left to the discretion of the teacher. I let my kids eat candy and chew gum, in return for them letting me drink coffee. The deal was as long as they didn't smack it or make a mess, they could do it. Kids love deals, and they went along with it, and I had no problems at all for 20 years. But I had to draw the line at bringing in warm food, like a McD's for breakfast....the aroma made everybody else too hungry....and that's a distraction.
