In other words, to be psychologically healthy and happy, do we need to have boy/girlfriends and/or husbands and wives? Or can we be perfectly happy and healthy without them? If we need them, then what are the detriments to not being in a serious relationship? If we can be happy and healthy without them, then why do many people feel compelled to form serious relationships?

I think that it's natural to have relationships. But I think that some put too much emphasis on the idea of being in one at all times. There are times when being alone is perfectly fine. One shouldn't be made out to be odd because they are not in a relationship with someone. Why is it when some folks reach a certain age, the hunt to find a partner or soul mate because project 101!! It should be considered okay to be alone as well as to be with boy/girlfriend or husband or wife.

Are you serious? Or, are you just seriously deluded. We do not "need" anything like relationships; we want them. We have evolved to want them, on average. There is no compulsion involved. I suggest you speak for your outlier self.

I am not in a relationship right now and I am happier than I have ever been in my life. It would have to be someone really special before I would allow my mental well being to be challenged...
