This is one that I did in my High School and I think that it went off really well. It was a battle of the bands aka BOB we first went around to different recording studios in the area to find a place that would offer so type of prize to the winners, if you can't do that go around to places like wal mart or target and ask if they will donate to your school for the event and normally they will go and find something to donate or even give you a gift card to find something for the event, but they do ask you most of the time that you find a prize if they do that and they want you to use up the gift card. At the same time that someone is doing that someone else is calling other high schools in the area and talking to the student council or some other student leadership group, to see if any of the other schools would like to join in to the battle of the bands, at my school we set a limit to three bands from each school and that included ours. Now at my school we charged an entrance fee of $2 a person you can charge more or less just go to the students first to see if anyone is willing to pay that price to see it. and if you want to make it a competition get some impartial judges to do the judging ex. if you do get a recording studio to donate some recording time you might want to ask the owner to come and to be one of the judges for the event you could even ask some of the teachers if they would be interested in doing that but also try and get some of the students from the schools that you invite could be the student body pres. or just some random student in the hall if you get one student from one school you need to get one from them all so that it is fair. also have them judge on a number of things and not just how good they sound like did their instruments overpower the vocals, how well did they sing/play, etc.
If you do something like that it may seem like a lot of work but it is tons of fun.
Good Luck!!

The great thing about high school fundraisers is that the students can be involved in almost everything!
The fundraiser should be organized in accordance with the students; not all schools will respond well to the same activities. If your school is particularly music-oriented, a battle of the bands is a great activity. You can make a concert of it, and charge admission. Another popular high-school fundraiser is a fashion show. You can get big companies to supply the schools, and have the students be the models, dancers, choreographers...
With a little less organization, you can plan a talent show, or a No-Talent Talent Show, which involves more amusing and unusual acts.
If you want smaller activities, you can go with a penny drive, which is a lot of fun and people get really enthusiastic about it. You can divide the school by grades, and each grade gets a big jar (maybe keep it in the lunch room every day for a week). Each grade collects pennies and puts it in their own jar; each penny is worth one point. They can also "bomb" other grades' jars with anything other than a penny, which detracts from that grades' jar (a nickel cancels 5 pennies). It's easy and simple.
If your looking at charities, you can also choose to steer clear from asking for money by having some sort of drive. Canned food is always good, but you can find a need in your community and try to fill it with what your students already have. For instance, one year I was involved in a drive for a local homeless shelter, who told us that they had need of a lot of socks for the winter months; socks are something that anyone can donate. I also participated in a children's book drive for a local hospital. You can even incorporate the drive idea with another idea; such as, charge a dollar or two less admission for anyone who brings a can of food.

Have a dance. Pick a theme that will really sell. Something your "parents" age group would "jump at going to". Like a 70's dance, have the dance with prizes, get the local merchants to donate, the local paper to run the ad for free - all this these donations can be a "tax write-off" for them. Get neat prizes, like go to the "top" travel agency in your area and they will give you a gift card for a few hundred dollars, or even a Free Cruise - go to the gas stations, get "car wash" giveaways - have the dance set-up that they come in the dress of the day! - Give door prizes, get as much as you can donated, free, get the best talker in your group to "hit" on the merchants and store owners, etc. Use the Auditorium at school, if its not big enough, go to the Arena, you will know the size of the event by the way the tickets sell. Get the printer the school uses to print your tickets for free.... see how it all comes together - you can also think about having a Fashion Show, and you do the same, the models are you and your fellow students, fashion shows really sell tickets... hope that helped!

We had good luck with an "overnighter" in the school gym. Of course we are a Christian school so we probably had fewer problems than most. the kids paid $10 to get in and we had some bands play, raffle prizes, goofy games between classes, a basketball tournament, a wiffleball tournament, volleyball, swimming, food, soda, t-shirt sales, and that kind of stuff. It takes a LOT of chaperones and you may want to omit any known trouble kids. We raised about $200 after expenses. You do have to hit the community really hard for donations!

We have always had really good luck with homemade cake auctions. Over the years we have turned it into a competition between the various civic groups (Lions, Elks, Rotary, Moose, Eagles) and it is not uncommon for ONE of the sales to gross over $1,000. The groups are great at supporting our kids and their activities...hope this helps, good luck to you!
PS: what type of activity is this for? It might help us think of more answers!

sell candy like everyone else. Get your parents to take it to work for you, and then they make all their workers buy it.
Another good one is to get all the cheerleaders out there to wash cars out in the parking lot of the school. Dress skimpy.
