laptops have a flourescent lamp, these are normally .5mm to 1.5mm diameter and run across the bottom behind the actual screen, they're pretty hard to find (you will probably have to order one from the manufacturer). If not done properly, they can be very dangerous to replace ... these bulbs require thousands of volts supplied by an inverter ...

Replacing:
remove the screen entirely from the lap top, you want to be sure there are no contacts to the battery. (split your laptop in half, by removing the screws, of course)
remove the front panel.
unplug the bulb from the inverter (usually a pair of red and white wires).
remove the metal from around the edges of the screen.
carefully remove the lcd.
replace the bulb
reverse ...

your laptop may differ, and it takes some work, but these bulbs can cost as little as $8. It's worth the little bit of work instead of paying someone $200 to do a 20 minute job.

From an inexperienced consumer's point of view, everyone above me who has answered is correct. From a computer hardware specialists's point of view, this is an easy fix. Ruling out the possibility of the inverter board dying, your problem is a dead LCD lamp. I know, lamp...bulb...they're easy to confuse. LCDs have several layers. The primary ones are the one that gives the picture its detail (the pixels) and the one that illuminates the pixels (the lamp). If your lamp dies, your screen is still functional; you just can't see it because it's not lit up. This is fixable. You just need to find a local company that fixes these things. All they have to do is replace the lamp and it will be good as new. Depending on your particular laptop, this could be expensive. In some cases, it's not even worth it to replace because the cost of repair is beyond that of buying a new laptop. Just do a little research and find out what it will cost to replace a dead LCD lamp.

Hi

No , you cant actually fix it , laptop screens are what they call LCD=Liquid Crystal Display , this means that once your screens cracks , dim , go black or other reason , well the only option will be to buy a new one , cause open it and youll see that the display is conected with 2 cables only , and is sealshut from the factory

Actually the "backlight" in your screen has gone out. You might can find someone who can actually open the screen to replace the part but you may have to replace the whole screen. If the computer is under warranty they'd probably replace the screen instead bothering with the backlight itself. I do tech support and see it everyday.

Sorry hun, theres no bulb in laptop screens as they are liquid crystal displays (lcd). is your laptop still under warranty? if not i'm afraid you cant do much to fix it besides getting an external monitor and just living with it when you cant access an external monitor.

Yes, the backlite lamp is either weak or going out...Ive changed quite a few, and it would probubly be difficult to repair for anyone who has never did one..the screen must be dissasembled, and the lamps are very small and delicate. The lamps are under $20.00.
