A retail store sells individual items to the public. A wholesaler sells pallets of items to the retailer. If you join a 'wholesale club', you are not really buying wholesale. The club is a retailer that sells larger packages for a smaller markup. No true wholesaler makes individual sales to anyone, not ever a retailer.

Wholesaler is the intermediary between the retailer and the manufacturer. While the retailer sells his product/s to the end user, the wholesaler sells his goods to the retailers. Thus a wholesaler is a vital cog in the supply chain. Typically the supply chain is - Manufacturer=>Stockist=>Wholesaler=>Reta... It varies slightly between each industry to industry but on a whole the above stands good. A typical departmental store retailer stores about 15000 items - he can't deal with all the manufacturer directly, so he goes through several wholesalers to buy the items he wants. Also a manufacturer cannot reach the thousands of retailers directly, they have to go through the local wholesaler to move their goods. National, international chains like Walmart, Tesco, Reliance buy-pass the typical supply chain and deal directly with the manufacturers to bargain (arm twist ?) on the prices .......

Retail is selling to the consumer in small quantities.

Wholesale is the selling of goods in large quantities usually at lower prices to a retailer.

Retail is the price that people without a wholesalers license pay. When you purchase something wholesale you are tax exempt under the pretense that the product will be resold and not for personal use.

retail : you sell goods in pieces, but wholesale: you sell in dozens or else, not pieces. Usually retail price is higher than wholesale price for each piece.

This is the consumer's nightmare of buying. The wholesaler sells merchandise to the retailer who happens to be your local merchant and then your merchant hikes up the price at least 99% to make a profit.
