Are todays political figures becoming bland and boring? People such as John "two jags" Prescott, and William "Billy Fizz" Hague might court controversy, but at least they made it interesting.

Compare these to David "Call Me Dave" Cameron, or Gordon "Tax Everything" Brown. Is the fun going out of politics?

I don't know if I'd call it the 'fun going out of politics'. I think I'd say many of our political figures lack personality. Not that they don't have personalities. I'm sure they do. But they are public figures and they put on a public face.

Their job depends on whether or not their constituents want them there. Everything they do is under public scrutiny. So they're gonna do their damnedest not to rile any feathers, not to say anything stupid. Because in this era of sound bites and out-of-context quotes, they can easily fall victim to the publics' appetite for controversy and the media's appetite for something that'll keep people watching.

To add to that, all the profiling and pooling and opinion gathering done by both parties in attempt to figure out that happy medium of issues that will gain them the most votes. A happy medium that they repeat and repeat, because that's what's gonna get them the most votes, not necessarily what they feel most passionately about.

It'd be nice if politicians acted a little more like themselves. They wouldn't come across nearly as much like talking heads.

I agree, but they are all tame compared to Churchill, Enoch Powell, Lord Boothby. They are all Conservatives now. I hated Arthur Scargill and all that he became but he was a character. Even the US has comic politicians.

Of what I've seen, a person who is self confident in their beliefs, liberal or conservative, scares people. These people are usually labelled 'extreme' or 'zealots' and usually never get elected to high offices.

You don't have to kidnap, torture and kill innocent people to make things interesting.
