I heard this story from someone a few months ago. His brother was camped out on the Murray River in NSW and a group of Aboriginals warned him not to leave anyone alone at the fireplace at night. They said there was a creature which they called a Brown Jack which might take them. They couldn't describe it because nobody had ever seen it. People just vanished. I thought this might be a local version of the popular Bunyip story but my research has yielded nothing. It could be a wind up but my Bushy friend says his brother knew these tribesmen and believed they were serious. I'm very interested in folklore and monster stories but I can't find any other accounts. Anybody here from NSW Australia familiar with this story?

I find the name very interesting. It sounds modern as its obviously english. Jack is a general term for a person with no established identity. Such as "Hey Jack". It's similar to Joe. "Average Joe" for instance.

Dark brown is actually the best camouflage colour for night time. Not black as many people erroneously think.

The combination of Brown Jack could therefore be construed as perhaps meaning Dark Stranger or Invisible Enemy.

Aboriginal lore supports the existence of smaller hairy men in Australia, the yuuri (pronounced ‘yawri’) or ‘brown jack’, which fulfill a similar role to that of European elves and leprechauns – they guard certain places, grant favours and play tricks on people.
