Call all of your credit card companies, bank, library (if you have a card), & any other info you may have inside of your wallet. Let everyone know you had it stollen & get new cards for everything. You can even contact the 3 credit score places (Transunion, etc) & have a 30 or 90 day watch to make sure no one opens a new credit card in your name. Ask a local policeman for advise. They may write up a report so you have record of when it happened.

Report it to the police first, then to Soc. Sec. office, cancel any credit cards, inform your medical insurance if you had one, do not forget to change the locks on the house, even a dead bolt, or put extra locks on the doors and use them. You can also check with your local post office, as they have a "lost-found" box and most thiefs will take the cash and credit cards and throw the rest away, then someone comes along and throws into a mail box, same for keys. Try to do these things ASAP. Sorry that your wallet was stolen, it's very scary when someone has all your information. Hope this info helps you out.

What you (well in this case your mom) needs to do is cancel all the credit cards first. Then go to the police department and file a lost wallet report. Basically what the police report does is cover your butt. So when there are transactions made with the checks, credit or what not, the police report is proof of when and where your mom lost it. You can show the case number to the credit card companies, the credit report companies, banks, etc.

You must take immediate steps to protect yourself from identity theft. Illinois Legal Aid has a whole series of steps that you should take when you lose your wallet--too many things to list here, so I'm giving you the link below. Save it in your "Favorites" and print out the instructions, then start doing the steps without delay.

Technically, you're supposed to report the loss of your driver's license with the police dept and also mention the loss of the SS card. Cancel all cards immediately.
