Your first question essentially answers itself. They are self sustaining because they are cyclical. someone can prove they are a bad person by doing things that drive people away which proves they are bad. And, they get to feel bad for doing something to drive someone away. The payoff is that they get to fell bad.

Question one has to deal with a world view of get what I can and keep people from taking it. It's a hard one to get away from because all you see is what you are trying to get or keep from being taken.

Question two has to deal with a world view that people out to get her. This is a hard one to get away from because all you can see are people trying to affect their own wills on you. Stay away please, because I know you are out to get me.

The best source I have on these kinds of things is Power Vs. Force by David R. Hawkins.
