I have a project due for a class in which i have to break a norm. Some of the examples given by the teacher were: Take items from someone's shopping cart, invade someone's you don't know personal space, etc. Any ideas?

Punch someone in the throat. I have this Catholic friend, he got punched in the throat by a nun.

I had the assignment for a sociology class once as well. Please just remember that breaking norms don't have to mean you're being obnoxious or rude. It could be as silly as facing the wrong way in an elevator. Or you could pay for the person's ticket behind you in line, and wait to see their reactions. Or you could just wear something the wrong way, like a shirt or pants. It all depends on your comfort level. I waited in the Walmart parking lot until people finished unloading things from their cart into, then I took it and put the cart away for them without saying anything.

Your teacher is an idiot- these examples are setting you up to be punched in the face. How about adding stuff to someones shopping cart & act like you got mixed up at the store. How about dropping out of this teachers class, that would be breaking the norm. How about crashing a wedding reception, dressed to the nines? Good luck.

Go into an elevator and stand facing the back wall, stand really close to someone, or stand so you are looking directly in front of someone, eye to eye.

Cut in line at a store

And this is not a stupid assignment at all! It's a field experiment in which you will try to learn how strangers, and friends and family react to the violation of a folkway. It's a great way to study social norms and mores!

Good luck!

Walk into another class at school, one in which you are not enrolled. Sit down and act like you belong there. Observe the reaction to you it any. I certainly would NOT take something from someone's shopping cart. Your teacher is putting you in danger of an arrest.

I had to do this for a class. One example given was to get in an elevator and face the other direction. The purpose of our assignment was to get us out of our comfort zone. I fed the Homeless. Some girls went to a gay bar.

that sounds like an awesome project to me
-walk out on a check
-try totally forgetting your manners for a day and being a slob and rude and stuff
-slap a girl lol that might get your as$ kicked though
ummmm wow its kinda hard to think of things.
i like that whole dress up as girl thing though. that'd be awesome. you might get a couple numbers doing that too!
