I can say that when I take a break from yoga and then go back to a regular practice, the first place I notice a change in my body is in my shoulders and arms. A lot of the most used poses in yoga tone the arms - plank, cobra, upward dog, etc. I don't notice as quick a change in my lower body, but there are certainly poses that focus on those areas. Ask your instructor before class to include poses for the areas you're interested in working on; usually they're happy to do it. Yoga is a great all over workout - and over time you'll definitely become toned, but you're not going to build a lot of muscle in the same way you would if you were lifting weights. If you want to get buff, you'll need to go to the gym.

It can tone and firm your butt and arms depending on the pose.
Just don't expect to get big, bulky muscles.

There is no such thing as toning muscles.

The only options available to you are to lose weight and to build muscle (or allow them to atrophy). With this in mind, yoga builds some muscle while you burn calories (weight loss).

Get it?

Butt, yes. Muscles, no. It is great, no impact exercise. It calms you down too. I love it!
