I have and older ford car with a 4 cylinder engine, I think it would be a good idea to use a synthetic for extra protection. Especially since I have a small oil leak. Any advice?

the molecules in synthetic oil are smaller and are of a uniform size. that is why if you have an engine that leaks oil it will leak more synthetic oil. it also has superior resistance to thermal breakdown compared to conventional oil. slick 50 is only a friction modifier. it makes the oil "slicker".
one way friction modifiers achieve this is thru the use of chlorinated compounds. at first look these friction modifiers seem great. however chlorine is a very corrosive substance. so yes, it is good to use synthetic oil, but no to the slick 50. also, do have your oil leaks fixed.

Slick 50 can't hurt the engine? Believe it still contains teflon... and takes well over 800 degrees for it to protect.. does your engine get over that?
The teflon not only gets filtered out and clogs the oil filter.... it'll clog up any low flow spot, essentially is has been shown to double the bearing wear...

The belief that synthetic oil will help a leak, or cause a leak isn't true... it will do neither... stick to a 10w-30 or 10w-40.... the high mileage formula in these is a tad better.. and may actually stop the leak or at least severely slow it down.

Lucas oil treatments, and the like (stp, bars, motorhoney, etc) are just thickeners with cheap additives... not worth the money..

Lucas oil stabilizer now... seen that make oil foam when used..... (air isn't a very good lube)
Also the "you must use syn the rest of the life of the engine if you use syn" is totally false....., mix the two, change conventional with synthetic every other time you change the oil... won't hurt anything..

Slick 50 is an engine treatment, not synthetic motor oil. There is a difference. Yes, I have used Slick 50 and some other types of engine treatments in all my street cars and some of my race cars. My belief is that if Slick 50 does half of what it says it will do, it's still worth the money. If your car is leaking oil, I do not reccomend synthetic motor oil. It's more expensive to just be dripping on the ground. It can't hurt to treat your engine to some Slick 50, or other quality oil treatment, but I'd just use regular engine oil and make sure the oil pressure is good. Low oil pressure will kill the engine faster than anything else.

Synthetics are great. Slick 50 is snake oil. The old wives tale that synthetics leaks more comes from the early 70s when Mobile 1 came out only in 5/20. You can buy whatever weight synthetic you want now.

First off, Slick 50 does very little to extend engine life. Practically worthless.

Synthetic oils are best used over the life of the car. Switching a high-mile engine to synthetic oil can often cause several major problems, such as sludge dislodgement and increased oil leaks. The best thing you can do for your car is have the oil changed every 3K miles with quality normal oil of the right weight. Synthetic oil is slightly better on gas mileage, has better viscosity stability, and goes longer between oil changes. But it will NOT do much for an engine that is already worn and has been fed normal oil all its life.

slick 50 not only is it not synthetic it isnt even oil it is an oil treatment. And for the synthetic it will leak out much faster than conventional oil. You would be doing no one a favor except the oil companies and the store you buy it from. Do not use synthetic oil for this car.

first off the synthetic oil will not do anything about ur oil leak, for that i recommend LUCAS Engine Oil Treatment. Sythetic oils are a good idea for older cars, but the real difference is that synthetic oils will not break down as fast as a normal oil.

If I were you instead of getting a synthetic additive for your oil; just start using sythetic oil in your car period. I recommend Mobil 1. It is trusted by Mercedes and is in all of thier cars.

Using Slick 50/duralube products can improve performance, but they are mearly synthetic oil additives, but if you only use synthetic oil you are getting that much more protection. Also using synthetic oils can result in increased hp and gas mileage.

BEWARE: SWITCHING TO SYNTHETIC OIL MEANS THAT FROM THAT POINT ON YOU !!!MUST!!! USE SYNTHETIC OIL IN EVERY OIL CHANGE UNTILL THE CARS DEATH.

the synthetic oil is a very good idea...except one thing...you have a small oil leak...synthetic is very expensive. You should get the leak fixed first. Mobil 1 is one good oil I have used in the past...it even increased my fuel milage.

It sounds like a great idea. I will advise that if you do make this decision, have your engine cleaned with a detergent cleanser to remove any built up sludge that may be in you oil case. The next problem is deciding from a multitude of the extra protection products.
