Are you speaking of a "square" yard? Because if so, then most of the answers you have received are incorrect.

A "square" foot i.e. 12 inches high, 12 inches wide and 12 inches in depth would hold 1728 square inches. A square yard would hold 27 square feet. 27x1728=46,656 square inches.

To square something you times the number by it self and then times that answer by the same number. For instance 3 feet time 3 feet equals nine feet, nine feet time three again gives you 27 feet. 27 is the square feet in a yard, because you already know that there are three feet in a linear yard.
