This depends on your style and position to play....
Typically offensive players play with shorter sticks (cut to their upper chest) since this allows them to bring the puck into their body when going around players.
Defencemen like their sticks a bit longer to poke check the puck away from opposing players.... I play D and I like to cut it just below my chin...
Again cutting it at your nose is OK.... What I would do is start long and before you butt the stick try it out... If it feel confortable, at a certain length, then your done.... If not cut it a bit shorter....

Typical length of your stick, with the toe of the stick on the ice and you in your skates, the stick should be approximately at your chin. Any additional length should be cut off.
The other thing you need to decide is the lie of you stick. It's the angle of the blade to the shaft. Some people are comfortable with the stick out away from their body and then have a bigger lie, others keep it closer, and have a low lie.

Go to a store and place the blade of the hockey stick on the tip of your toe. The end of the stick should be about the smae height as you. You can always get out the saw.

It depends on what position you are. A good way to tell is to put on your skates and place the toe of your stick blade on the floor. The end of your stick should come between about your adam's apple to your nose.
If you play defense, you might want it a little bit longer for things like poke checking. If you play forward, you might want it a bit shorter for greater stick control. If you play goalie...then this probably won't help you.

well everyone likes a different size stick. the way i learnt how to tell what was the right size was it should go to your nose without skates on, and with skates it should reach your chin. dont get a stick that is too small or else you will hurt your back. good luck
