I believe Montana used to have no speed limit on most roads, but changed because they had people visiting the state for no reason than to go ludicrous speeds, which was creating a hazard for the residents.
Currently, a lot of sparsely populated northern mid-western states between but not bordering the mississippi and the Pacific coast states have 75 on interstates. I believe both Wyoming and North Dakota have 75.

Being a federation, the U.S. rely on individual state legislations, each state having different laws. Therefore many states have different speed limits.
We go from a low Max Speed of 65 mph on highways in most states to 70 in others, to 75 in a few states, and to the maximum of 80 mph in a few selected states (which is approx. 130 km/h).
Montana used to have no maximum speed limits on highways, but that privilege has been terminated not too long ago.

I seen a speed limit sign that said 90mph which it was a long straight away. It was down south somewhere in Mississippi. After that it said go 70mph when we got to the curves. That was the highest speed limit I ever seen.

75... Unmarked roads are still governed by a speed limit depending on the zoning.
