I had an emergency c-section the first time as well. However, the 2nd one, as I kind of knew what was happening, was an easy as can be. I am pretty calm as it is, and my thoughts were focusing on seeing my new baby. Some doctors will give a mild sedative to take the edge of anxiety off, if you are that tense. Good Luck!

I was the same way- went 19 hrs into labor, with the epidural not working the last 4 hrs of it... and my baby just wasn't descending... so they told me I'd have to go c-section... I also got a little hysterical myself... scared to death! They tried the spinal epidural, and when I was on the table, I felt them poking my belly!!!!!! I was mortified! I told them I could feel it, and that's when they said they'd have to put me under. Maybe see if you can do that? HOwever, I was also afriad of that- after seeing these shows about how ppl wake up and can't do anything about it , and feel terrible awful pains from the surgery... so I asked them, and they said I wouldn't wake up until after it was finished.
I definitely didn't wake up during the surgery... but I do have to say... here are some negatives about being put under- you won't be able to hold your baby once first born, you can't see him/her right away like you can if you are awake, they put a tube down your throat, so you can't talk for a few days- and your throat hurts like hell.... I also got this metal like taste a week after my surgery- and couldn't eat ANYTHING. I forced myself to eat a small bowl of cereal and it- everything I would try to eat, all tasted like metal, completely disgusting and horrible.
Anyways, it's up to you- ifyou really can't handle it, ask to be put under. I really hope to have my 2nd natural because I get terrified when I think about the pains of my surgery. But some ppl can take pain better... I really am not one of those who can.
Also-by being put under, I had to have oxygen- and to make things worse, I am kind of claustrophobic!!! So, putting that oxygen mask made me feel like I was suffocating even though it was helping me breathe... then I had to have the nose things after that because my oxygen level wasn't good enough for at least a day or two.
Goodluck and congrats on your new baby :) They are worth everything you have to go through!

You need to talk to your doctor and anesthesia will either call you the night before or talk to you right away the time of the surgery. Just tell them what you need.
I had such a panic attach during my first C-section that i tried to leave the room. I was screaming. They gave me something and I actually fell asleep right there.
Congrats on your new baby!

Hello. So glad you asked this. I have the same worry if i need a c section. I suffer panic attacks through claustrophia related situations, i was going to ask for them to give me a general if i need a c section. If however, you want to stay awake to see your little one born i am sure they can give you a calming down drug. It must happen to others i am sure of it. My friend told me that when she needed a knee operation, she was terribly worked up and they gave her a jab that really made her calm down and happy through it. So i reakon there must be. Congratulatons on your little baby x :)

Well I have had 3 c sections, and I freak out to, mostly about the spinal....the last one the girl didn't know what she was doing...but anyways, I think that should be able to give you something to relax you...I wouldn't see why not. But I think you'll do fine....good luck

Oh honey I have no idea what will calm you. I too had an emer c and my OB said the next time it would be best to have another one. So when I do get pregnant again, i will be in your shoes. Just keep in mind that your drs know what they are doing. you did it once before and you can do it again. Its only a short surgery and you will have your baby in your arms so soon. good luck and congrats on the new baby

When i had my c-section i asked to be put under (asleep) cause i did not want to lay there knowing i was being cut open. I refused an epidural.
They can give you seconal/stadol or valium. They gave me both but that was before hand cause i had to be flown from one hospital to another. So they gave me that for the pain and to calm me down.
You do not have to be awake during your c-section if you do not want to.
Good luck
