I actually work at petsmart as an animal care specialist and one thing is that we find it to be very important for potential pet parents to interact with their potential pets to get to know what their personality type is.

We take you through the best ways to pick them up, the safest way to hold them, what to do if they nip you out of fear (how to react or- not react more like- as to not scare them).

Interaction and hands on practice with picking up and holding potential pets is very important so that not only you know you're getting the right pet, but we know we're selling the right pet to the right pet parent. if we don't feel its a right match, we won't sell that particular pet to you. We'll find another solution for you.

We want you AND the pet to go home happy.

After you find the one whose right for you, we explain how to acclimate him to your home, how to make him comfortable, what you'll need to get him set up, and send you home with a care sheet and a 14 day guarantee.

Yes you can hold a hamster! A Petsmart employee will help you check out your potential pet.

I've held rodents at pet stores, including PetSmart. If you encounter a pet store that doesn't allow you to handle the animals, run. The animals may not be properly socialized.

Yes, any pet store should let you hold ANY pet before purchasing it (well, except a fish, lol). If they don't, LEAVE.
