to mindocto i am running xp professional and my mail is yahoo

Either your firewall settings are blocking the avast scanner or check avast settings:
right click the systray icon and click on On-Access protection Control
On the left hand column click Internet mail; on the right hand pane, select customize
under the SMTP tab see if the box "scan inbound mail" is ticked.

If it is and you are getting scanning errors, uncheck it and run a scan

It may be an installation error; reinstallation may fix it. If you still can't solve it, try the Avast forum

and what is your problem with avast?? i use that antivirus software for almost 2 years now, and still no problem..
