We are the ones who live in freedom. This freedom allows us to be the innovators of the world. We are over taxed but still low enough to create venture capitalism which in turn, stimulates creativity. This turns into invention. This invention makes us the rulers(so to speak) of the free world. We innovate everything, export it ,or have China make it for us,and sell it all over the planet.Mostly good, sometimes bad.Regulation leads to stifling of the creative process,so you win some and lose some.
Most of all,an American is a transplanted being from another country, that country, bred out after a few generations, who usually can't name anyone past "Great Grandma",when you ask them their pedegree says,"I don't know ,like English and German and some French ,I think, who cares ,I'm an American, screw all those other countries".An American loves his country, family and sports.West of the Rocky Mountains,he's liable to eat cereal for breakfast,Mexican food for lunch, and a nice steak and potato for dinner, drink 5 or 6 cups of coffee a day an can whip any two Europeans at once....God I love being a Yank!

There are too many variations on what people might consider a "true" American to be. Everyone could argue that point to death, but technically speaking, if you have an American Birth Certificate and have not given up your citizenship, or if you are a naturalized citizen, you are an American.

If you mean culturly? There is no deffinition for that. Everyone in America/USA has come from some other country besides the Native Americans. Americans develope the way they live based on their family history and where they come from. So basically, we steal everyone else's culture.
