I spent 5 months a year there during the 80's, it was a beautiful relaxed place.
I've heard recently that it's not safe to walk on the beach at night anymore.
I lived in the oldest house on the beach, called 'Inshallah', a beautiful colonial home, the first on the beach, next to the hotel with a big ugly dolphin over the pool.
You must go and visit Barbours cave restaurant for a stunning setting in a blowhole with the stars shining down on you while dining. It's not even that expensive and they'll pick you up and drop you off. It's on the web, just tap in the above. George Barbour also had a great beach bar, which should still be there.
As someone said, Watamu is a good fun place, Ocean Sports (open shorts) hotel used to be the Kenya cowboy choice, Hemingways next door is much more commercial.
As another said, you should fly down to Zanzibar for a couple of nights, that's my favourite place on the East now. Do Mitu's Spice tour and go over to the east of the island for even better beaches.Visit the old slave prison, slave island and stay at the Stone Town Inn, if it's still there. The resto there is the best for me. Rent a motorike if you can ride and explore.

i think i visited friends who were there. I was at Bamburi beach. Diani seemed nicer. White sand. watch out for sand flies and crabs and scorpions though. Plenty of insect repellent.

The beaches in Kenya are fantastic. The sand is so white. It's like paradise. Try to go to Zanzibar if you have time.

avert April and may as they have a tendency to be the wettest and that i trust that it may also be cooler in June and july. besides the undeniable fact that, I went there very last may and the elements replaced into tremendous albeit somewhat extra humid than universal apperently!
