There have been some studies pointing to a connection between neurobiology (including sensory reception) and art. Do artists, particularly painters, perceive and process information in ways that differ from non-artists? If you can point to sources or studies, that would be most helpful.

You might look at the book , "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain." It helps people access the artistic (right) side of the brain more easily, and talks about why this works.

They probably do. When you are an artist, you process images by breaking them up into how you can recreate them. Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain is definitely a good source.
