Yes, you can train gourds. I've wrapped ropes around long dippers to make a spiral pattern in the neck, and tied some in knots. It must be done very slowly so the gourd doesn't break. There are also molds that you can put the young gourd into. When they mature, they fill out the mold and take the shape of the mold.

There is a great website about all things gourd. http://www.AmishGourds.com

I grew Gourds two years ago. They can be trained. You have to tie them with something soft that will not dig into the skin. It takes a lot of time and patience. There are Websites that can help you. Just type in "growing gourds" in your Search area. That is how I learned to do it.

Similar to square watermelons grown in japan.... the thing is, whatever shape you are trying to form them to, it has to expand with them as they grow...... therefore, round or square would be easiest. For elaborate shapes, you're going to have the identical shape in several sizes so that as the gourd grows, you can replace it's 'container' with the next larger size as the gourd becomes pressed for room in it's existing container. Look up "square watermelons" on any search engine. It'll describe the process more thouroughly....
