Make a plug by pushing a short length of string or fishing line through a piece of cardboard a little bigger than the hole. Put some glue on the cardboard and push it through the hole and pull it against the back of the wall so that you have a backing to work against. Cut the string after the glue dries.
If you are lucky, the pieces may still be around so that you can just fit everything back like a puzzle while holding them in place with the string and cardboard. That way, you can replace some of the wallpaper.
If you don't have the pieces or they went into the wall out of reach, use a patching compound to fill the hole against the cardboard backing. After it dries, sand it smooth and hope that it's a nice place to hang a picture.

this is how you repair a hole:
you can easily patch it without solid backing. Just cut a scrap of drywall an inch larger than the hole all around ( for instance, cut a 4-inch by 5-inch patch for a 2-inch by 3-inch opening), score the back with a utility knife an inch from the edge all around, snap the drywall, and peel the 1-inch wide strips off the face paper. Now butter the perimeter of the wall opening with plenty of joint compound, press the patch into place, and use a drywall knife to smoothly embed the edge of the patch's face paper into the compound. Apply two coats of compound over the entire patch, feathering the compound onto the surrounding drywall, and sand it when dry.

go to Lowe's (i like) or homo-depot (don't like) and buy a drywall board patch the stick onto the wall and all you have to do is get a small pail of joint compound
patch, compound, 4 inch putty knife, no skills, 10 minutes priceless :)
hese something no one will teach you but the best---- Beval the edge of the drywall at 45* then apply patch this will let the compound feather in nicely----sweet----

Ok, How do you know that it's even there if the wall is wallpapered? But, I guess if it's actually there use newspaper and duct tape. (It works)
