I bred hamsters for several years and my daughter has now had two hamsters. I have ALWAYS found males to be WAY friendlier than females. However... I've had a TOUGH time finding friendly hamsters at ALL in my area (Washington State). When I bred them I lived in Southern California, and they were all really friendly. Anyway... it mostly depends on how it was raised. Pet store hamsters are typically under-socialized. If you can find a hamster person who ended up with a litter of pups, getting one of them is your best bet. However, it might be that you live in an area where petstore hamsters are actually nice (this is more common in stores that buy locally...ie from breeders who socialize their pups)... just be sure to handle them a LOT when they're young (they sell 'em at around 4weeks of age).

If you really want it to be friendly, just get one. However, if you DO only get one... you have to commit to playing with it daily for it's entire life (3-5yrs if cared for properly).

Outside of breeding or cohabiting together, I've never really noticed much of a difference in the behavior of the males and females. As they approached 3 years, there was a bit more aggression shown with males than with females. However, if you put the two genders in the same tank, the male tends to be more aggressive, especially in his "pursuit." As long as you get a hamster that is fairly young and hasn't been mistreated, either of the genders should make for a good pet. Just remember to not hold them to your face, my brother soon found out that they will be tempted to bite.

The males tend to be more aggressive in my experience. If you had him fixed that would probably be the best bet for a good pet, but I'm not sure if a vet will neuter a hamster. It's worth looking into. If you can't get a neutered male go for a female. They don't have high testosterone levels and can be a little more predictable.

The sex of the animal does not really matter. I have owned a few different hamsters, and many other small animals. I have had males and females be friendly and aggressive. It depends on their individual personalities. When selecting, watch the behavior of the animals you are choosing from, if they seem to be wary or too aggressive avoid buying it. If they come to you and crawl in your hand respond to your actions,, they will probably be friendly, they are animals and they react by instincts through smell and actions. If an animal likes you, it will display it right off, the same thing goes if it does not. Also you may want to try and pick animals you know are constantly handled, because they are used to it and will probably not bite, or act aggressively.

We had a male and he was the sweetest thing. I guess it really just depends on the animal (I saw that some people answered that males were aggressive). At the pet store, I suggest that you pick some up and play with / cuddle them for a couple a min to see if you can gauge its personality.

Good Luck!

Female cauz if u want to have more hamsters get a friend who has the same pet and breed them. I know it's not nice to the animals though. but i think animals are kinda like humans in a weird way. i suggest a female not cauz of breeding them but that if u have a animal the same type of human as you girl or boy. then get the same type as yourself.

My good friend had rats (which I'm told they are similar in personality) and the male rats were always friendlier.
