Your keyboard might be set up in the wrong mode. Do the following:

1. Go to Control Panel
2. Open Regional and Language Settings.
3. Go to the Language tab.
4. Click Details.
5. Pull down the list and make sure US is selected.

Try Alt+Shift.
It changes some of the keyboard values @ ; etc. You could have done it for mistake, and it just takes those two little buttons to put everything back into order.

Change the keyboard layout in preferences, from UK English, to American English!
