I'd like to buy a traditional hobby horse. I don't want one that looks like its made out of plastic or that makes silly electronic noises. I just want one that will last for years and become a treasured item. A google search has so far yielded nothing, but I can't believe these things still aren't being made.

A hobby horse is a long stick with a horse's head on top (not real, obviously). The stick sometimes has wheels on the opposite end. The object is for the child to put the stick between their legs and pretend to be ride the horse around. Hours of fun should ensue, with galloping around the garden, pretending to take jumps or playing cowboys. A great way of keeping children fit! The horse's head can be either very well made (and become a heirloom item), with proper leather bridles etc, but I do know you can buy very cheap ones .

Do you mean a traditional wooden rocking horse or an old fashioned 'Broom Stick' like horse? You can get the old fashioned wooden rocking horse but they are very, very expensive. Somewhere between £300 and £800 !!! I knew of a company, The Kensington Rokcing Horse Company, in Cornwall that made/makes them.
If you want a broom stick type I think it may be easier to make it. There used to be a UK company that imported them but they went bust about 9 months ago.

Funnily enough,on Saturday I was in a Somerfield Supermarket, and I heard a child say "What`s this for Mummy"? When I looked it was a hobby horse! I did not look closely at it ,so I can not tell you what the quality was like or even how much it was. I doubt it would have been of the quality you want, but I just thought it a coincidence !

I have seen them in John Lewis's, Past Times, Pier, and Debenhams. Failing this try the Internet. www.orchard toys.co.uk
or just type in orchard toys or wooden toys.

Hope this helps.
