the sheraton is great. it is in a great location and it is very clean. i do like the doubletree and the hilton. it just depends on where you want to be. if you are planning on shopping then the sheraton is the best bet. if you are going to the museums, then i would stay at the hilton, because it is farther south by grant park. the person who said not to walk around after 11:30 is wrong. it is like any big city, you do have to be careful, but i live in the gold coast (downtown) and i work 3pm-3am and i walk home every night. i also go to the gym at 3am when i get off of work. there isn't much to do that late, but as long as you are smart, chicago is a safe city.

The Sheraton's ok. You can also try the Swissotel Chicago, which is just across the river from the Sheraton. It's a bit smaller and more intimate, but very fashionable. Not quite as cookie-cutter as Sheraton.
Also, try hotels like the W and the Hotel Monaco. They're pretty cool and right downtown.
As far as prices go, Chicago hotels are not exactly cheap, but you can get good deals on weekends and around holidays.

honestly, i have no idea why people tell others to go to sears tower. i think it's the most boringest thing to do. i think to get a view you should go to john hancock center cause at least there you can enjoy the view and eat or have a cocktail. sheraton hotel is pretty good. it's right in downtown so it's not too bad. i think the drake is better, but it's pretty pricey. the sheraton is a decent area cause you can do a lot of stuff around there. go shopping and stuff. going out late isn't dangerous...there's just nothing to do after 11:30 unless you hit the bars or clubs and stuff. but it's pretty much safe and there are taxis everywhere.

Hi
It really depends how much you want to spend- if you want a pool- what area you want to be close to and what your interests are.
If you could post a little more general information- I could quide you to a better fit.
For a standard answer I would say my best "surprise" hotel was Hotel Alegro. The decor is outrageous chic- they have free wine in the lobby in the evening and a really good restaurant/bar area attached (not sure if it is owned).
My other favorite is the Sheraton by the river because it is walking distance to Navy Pier and has a pool.
