Install your old hard drive in your new computer setting the jumper to Slave. Copy off the files you want, reformat the drive and them you will have 2 hard drives.

That's odd that your jumpdrive doesn't work ... mine works even on an old 99 Mac.

If your new computer has a floppy drive you could use floppy drives to transfer everything -would be a very inefficient and slow way to do it but it would work.

If your old computer has a CD burner you could transfer them via CD but I doubt somehow that it has a CD burner.

This is a little more expensive solution, but if you wanted to keep the old computer and/or you have other computers in your home, you can get a thing to network your computers together (we had one for a while when we had 2 computers) and then you can transfer the files pretty easily.

The easiest way is to simply take out the old hard drive (from the windows 98 computer) and put it into the new computer. It does require opening up the computer, but it's really not all that hard to do. I really don't know anything about what's inside there, yet I was able to put an old hard drive into a new computer (along with the one that was already in there so it has 2 now) just with my dad showing me how.

Then you have all your files, plus you just added a whole new hard drive to your computer where you can store stuff!

Using flash drive is the easiest way, if you think that the flash drive itself is the problem you can use even your MP3 player or digital camera as an external drive exactly the same way.
Some more info which might help you:

If you need to copy a lot of information then you should consider networking the two computers:

Using direct cable connection - you can use crossover cable to connect the two PCs (they both must have network adapters), for more info click the link below:

If you have a router and want to learn how to set a network between the two PCs read this tutorial:

I would put the data files on a flash drive and move them that way. I would install the programs from the original CDs.
