This is not a job for you if you have bad short term memory. Try working in retail...it's cleaner, plus you can get store % discounts on the clothes!

you should first work as a hostess of a restaurant for the first 6 months, that way you just greet people and show them to their seats. this will also give you time to get acquainted with the menu and help you in remembering if it is something you are around constantly. In no time, the menu will catch on to you out of habit and experience. Be patient with yourself, have a great personality, SMILE and if you have a hard time spelling, just abbreviate words--as long as the chefs understand what you wrote, you'll be fine!
I work as a Shift Supervisor for Starbucks, it is the best job ever (until I become an RN!) because they have an extensive training program, and the people are GREAT, GREAT, GREAT! Everyone you work with are called "partners" and the managemnt team is there to help and support you if you want to move up the ladder! It doesn't even feel like a "job" because we have so much fun with each other (even with our managers!) and by connecting with customers! You also can get health benefits even if you are part time, free coffee and tea, free drinks, weekily tips and you can request what part of the day you would like to work once you become an established barista. I would highly recommend applying at Starbucks if you are a people person and just love being around people in general! Good LucK!

Yep. I had the same problem in my first job as a waitress. TIPS:
1. Stop telling yourself you can't remember things, that limits your thinking.
2. As you approach the table remember that you are paid to serve these people, and remembering their needs is part of that service.
3. Take a note pad to write down what you hear. (They have little pocket note books).
4. Always try to begin in a logical section of the table to take orders -- example Left to Right. Or always Female to Male, etc.

They have abbreviations for items on the menu that they will probably teach you if you are worried about spelling, but I wouldn't recommend waiting tables unless you are quick minded and have a lot of patience. Oh ya if you arent good at remembering things that you wont make very good money, and might get fired. Nah not for you.

Sorting out food, giving it around to people, getting paid for that. It's got to be a career!! I would hate to do it though.

I was a waitress and really didn't like it. People are too demanding and want their food Right away. Maybe you will like it so give it a try.
