One of the most important developments of the High and late Middle Ages was the rise of lay religious piety and devotion. Discuss the causes and features of this as well as the efforts of the church to channel and control it, keeping in mind that some expressions of lay devotion were judged heretical in the eyes of ecclesiastical authorities.

So thats the assignment, I have alot of information the entire period... but I'm not sure which parts to include for this question. Any suggestions would be great. I don't really need some long web article, unless it is really specific. Just ideas! THanks!

I think spider is correct, you need to narrow your focus, you could discuss the many different rules of monestaries between the different orders, or you could talk about the crusades, or the issue of the explosion in cathedral building ,and the selling of indulgences to fund them would all be good topics

look up "Lay Confraternities" in the Catholic Encyclopedia or just Google it. "Brothers of the Common Life" is such a group, but that began in the low countries some time in the fifteenth century.
