They originate from the Japanese Tea ceremonies, where a number of small candles ( now known as Tea Lights) were used to add ambiance to the ceremony. They eventually were used under the Tea pots to keep the Tea warm during servings.

Tea lights where originally used to keep the teapot warm by being placed under the pot, hence the small squat size and shape
