The winner gets 180 points. 2nd place gets 170. Then, from 3rd to 6th it goes down by 5 points (i.e. 165, 160, 155, 150). From 7th to 10th it goes down by 4 points, and from 10th to 43rd it goes down by 3.
There is a 5-point bonus for each driver who leads at least one lap, and 5 more bonus points for the driver who leads the most laps.
In Nextel Cup, there is a special thing called "the Chase". After 26 races, the top 10 drivers and any other driver within 400 points of the leader are locked into the final ten race Chase for the NEXTEL Cup. These drivers get their points re-adjusted, starting with the leader in 5050, 2nd place in 5045, and so on... (they get their points readjusted so that no other driver outside the Chase can reach them)
For the last 10 races, points are awarded the same way, and at the end of the year, the Chaser who finishes with the most points is the champion.

It doesn't work, that's the problem. I'm sure my friend Misty could
explain it in detail.
