Reading is the best way to increase your vocabulary. Each time you read a word you really do not understand or have never used before, ,jot it down mentally or in a notebook and look it up (computer or dictionary). Try to use that word in your ordinary conversation whenever it applies to the topic you are talking about. Looking up words will lead to other words/meanings in the same genre.
Working crossword puzzles (New York Times, always has strange words and meanings) Is aways a good way to look up words you are not familiar with. Vocabulary research will make you a good reader and excellent conversationalist.

Reading, reading and more reading, looking up words you don't understand in a dictionary.
When my children were younger we used to play what we called the Dictionary game. Flick through pages, one whose turn it is says stop, then chooses a number 1 to 4 for the column. Then they give a number 1 to 10 or 12. You count down that number of words in the chosen column and then they have to define that word.
Playstation it isn't but my kids have a broad vocabulary and high reading age.

Read! Read everything! You'll get a sense of the word in context.

Also, get a word-a-day calendar, or find a web service that will email you a new vocabulary word each day. (MyYahoo offers this.)

Or randomly pick a word and then look it up in the thesaurus. Familiarize yourself with all the synonyms, and the slight differences between them (ex: intelligent, witty, brainy, smart - all mean the same thing but suggest slightly different aspects of it).

One way I have increased my vocabulary is to do cross-word puzzles daily. Another is to choose a word from the dictionary that is not familar to you and write it on sticky note and put on your fridge and look at it periodically, and it will become part of your vocabulary.

I would say it's to read a lot of books, and look up those words. Then you can write the words down with their meaning in a list, and write a story using those words. That way it helps you remember the definition and how to use them.
You can also play one-person scrabble, everytime trying to make a word you just looked up in the dictionary.

Read all kinds of books, not magazines. Or read the National Geographic. It is very informative. Brouse through the dictionary and read what words mean. This will give you a good knowledge of different words.
