I'm after only serious answers here....
How do you create heat using no electricty? I'm trying to find a way to heat a room, or at least warm up part of it, without using any electricity. My boyfriend has a basement bedroom with animals in it and pretty much all his plugs are in use for his tv, computer, radio/alarm, and one little ceramic heater which is dying fast... He often tells me that his hands will turn white and today he was so cold he couldnt' stop shaking. I want to figure out how to help him heat his room a little so he's not so cold and neither are the animals (rodents).
Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciate, thank you.

Thanks to everybody for your answers...
Some more details, his bedroom is in the basement, he had to move back home b/c of no income (we both searched for work for months & got nowhere fast)....he has no door, it's virtually the entire basement so he has a lot of area to heat up. Candles, though I like the idea, will not work b/c it has be soemthing that can be left goin while he's sleeping...so I wouldn't want to use the gas/kerosene heaters for those reasons, & he really has no ventilation in the room & b/c of the animals (rodents = 2 hamsters) I don't want anything that will cause harm to him or them. As for unplugging things, he lives in his room, seldom goes upstairs, & the computer/phone is our communication lines since neither of us can get the other daily... & neither of us have access to vehicles right now.
I love him wiht all my heart and that's why I want to find something that will help heat his room b/c when I'm there with him we spend a lo

Obtain a plugboard and put all the minor appliances on it. Then get an electric fan heater. These are the most effective electric heaters. You will have to calculate the current draw of all of these, but the radio-alarm only sips at power and the computer and accessories might draw two amps. The TV probably about one. If the power points in the basement are rated at ten amps then there are four or five left over for a heater. I suggest he turn the TV fully off when using the computer and vice versa.
There is some danger of CO poisoning from a kerosene heater but if correctly adjusted and not turned all the way up there is actually little chance. I have seen survivalist websites which give detailed instructions on how to use and maintain a kerosene heater. If he is in a basement the problem is that all the heat goes up, but so does the exhaust the heater produces. Turn off before retiring to the cot.

if you have a laundry room down in the basement there is a attachment that you put on the duct work that puts the heat back into your living space instead of it going outside, only works of course when you are drying your clothes, kerosene heaters are a good source but not to be placed in a small area do to the fumes that will build up ( a five gallon) heater will last up to 9 hours on low setting and about 6 hours on higher setting, but with the full prices, it would be cheaper to buy him a power surge strip for all his other stuff and that will free up one of the outlets for the heater (which needs to be replaced) buy one with a thermostat built into it, and see if you can find one that will shut off it gets knocked over.

I think you should buy him a new space heater. I see the suggestions for fires or kerosene heaters, but both of those could cause a build-up of carbon monoxide, which is fatal. Get your boyfriend a carbon monoxide detector so he can be warm and safe. I'm not sure why he's in a basement. If he's old enough to, he should rent his own apartment. If he's still under-age, he should ask his parents to move upstairs.

There is alot of good answers already posted.
But if you are looking for a EASY & CHEAP method of warming up a room temporaly just light a few candles (of course someone needs to stay in the room while they are lit to maintain safety).
A lit candle increases a rooms tempature by 1 degree.
Give it a try, you probably have a few around the house, doesn't cost anything to light one up and see if it helps. If it's working buy him one of those big 3 wick candles and a BIC bbq lighter for christmas!

sounds like he needs to unplug a few things and buy a new space heater. you can buy oil heaters but they really don't recommend them in small places, because of the fumes are not good for you. whats more important playing on his computer and watching TV or keeping him and the animals warm? he can always turn stuff back on when the room warms up.

They have portable Kerosoene space heaters you have to be very carefull with them but hey work well. They have gas space heaters that dont need to be vented to the outside. whatever you buy make sure you take precautions for carbonb monoxide and you might want to get a carbon monoxide detector. Insulate and seal the rest of the house .

farting won't help plenty. there are various the thank you to generate warmth with out utilising electrical energy. many human beings have gas and oil warmth, or burn timber in a hearth, or burn propane, or what i might do if i become living in a tent is get a catalytic propane heater. that is emissions are low sufficient that it is user-friendly to respire with it, and it would not burn something so there is not any hearth threat.

Plug all drafts around windows and doorways leading to outdoors. Put insulated safety plugs in exisiting sockets to keep out drafts. If it is that cold, he needs to have some source of heat before he freezes his animals and himself.

Get rid of the rodents and replace them with rabbits. Their temp is naturally over 100 and the poo is fuel.
