Not all woman have the same extreme reaction I did. The HSG test was very painful for me, BUT my tubes were blocked and by forcing the dye against the blockage it cause severe cramping. I also found out I was allergic to the dye. MOST woman only mild discomfort if any expecially if the dye spills out freely. The test includes placing a tube inside of your cervics and pushing dye up the tubes on a monitor they and you will be able to see if the dye is spilling out which means no blockage. Good luck to ya.

I just had this test done today. I thought about not even getting it because I could not think of any way that I could have a blocked tube. Well I do, one is blocked so just be prepared just in case you do because it really came as a blow to me.
Anyway, for the most part the pain is minimal. There is a bit of pressure on and off while they are getting the instrauments all set up down there. The only time that it REALLY was bad was when they had the dye almost all the way injected. It felt like REALLY bad cramps. Now, afterwards it feels a little bit sore on my side where the ovary is at. The entire procedure including set up and everything only took about 10 minutes.
When you get it done, take pain reliever before you go in-it will take the edge off. Don't be scared, it's not that bad and it will be alright :)

I had this done Friday afternoon and a lot of women say it doesn't hurt. For me, it hurt. It was very uncomfortable when they inflamed the balloon. This was the most painful part and it felt like a jult of cramps....very very bad cramps. Once the procedure was done, the cramps started to slightly go away, but didn't fully go away for over 24 hours. Now, it being Sunday, I'm fine, like nothing happened. Good luck to you. I hear a lot of women get pregnant right after this procedure. I have been TTC for three years and nothing, so hopefully this procedure will work :)

It was uncomfortable, but I wouldn't call it painful. There was some strong cramping and a general nauseous feeling (I think because I was very nervous).
They might offer you some kind of sedative, just to keep you from tensing up and making the uterus cramp even more.
Now, after they injected the fluid (the contrast material), yes, it was painful. It's mainly because there's a lot of pressure. It lasted for a few hours (the discomfort, not the test, lol ... feels kind of 'raw'). You can take ibuprofen beforehand unless your doctor says not to.
Ask if they'll use oil-based or water-based contrast material. Oil-based can make it hurt a lot more, I've heard.

My wife had this procedure done. She said it felt extreme cramps.
However, she DID have a blocked tube and now at least we know the cause of our dilemma!

I had this done after not being able to get pregnant. It was very painful to me, but I got pregnant shortly after. It might be different now because I had it done 4 years ago.
