Ahhh.... my favorite movie of all time! I believe that he meant that she should be cherished and be with someone who has passion for her, not by someone as meek as Ashley Wilkes. She is a strong person and would need a strong partner but she is consumed with someone who would not suit her. I think that his underlying statement would be that he has passionate feelings for her and that she should let him cherish her because he knows how much she means to him.
