In 1994, the American people, feeling that the country had shifted too far in one direction and being fed up with it, swept the Democrats out of power in both houses of Congress. The Republicans, led by Gingrich and Dole, were given a chance to change the direction of American policy.

It seems to me that this election is very similar. The legislative and executive branches both controlled by the same party, until the people decide they've had enough and sweep the other party into power in Congress, the only major difference being that Republicans campaigned on their Contract with America in '94, while Democrats this time ran on basically nothing except disapproval with Iraq and the "time for a change" mindset.

I believe that if the incoming Dems practice the bipartisanship they're preaching about now, they could stay in power for quite a while, but if they over-reach as Gingrich and Co. did in the 90's, they'll be gone in a hurry. Your thoughts?

not necessarily,, but your mostly right,,, Democrats have taken power at a different time in American history; however, we made history,,, and with the technology we have now,, the Congress will be closely scrutinized,, their every move will be recorded,,, the crooks will quickly be thrown out,,, I hope Democrats will retain power forever,, or at least my lifetime,, because I truly believe they are on the most part,, the better direction for America

A minor point... the legislative branch is the House of Reps and the Senate; the executive branch is the White House and it is still controlled by the Republicans.

Generally, I agree about bi-partisanship. I think the more significant role is one of centrism - no favoring the extreme left or right, and governing based less on rhetoric and pork and more on what's good for the majority of citizens. Of course, all this is much easier said than determined and done.

The Democrats have no agenda or policy, the only reason they won was that many people just didnt like Iraq war, and the gridlock and deadlock in our system ( which is a permanent fixture), I dont think they will head the lessons of '94, but I hope they will, or maybe in '08 we will run SanFran Nan out of town on a rail.

Hopefully they will practice bipartisanship like you've said and they've promised. I only worry that Pelosi is too left to agree with much of anything from the Republicans. Honestly, the Dems didn't win as much as the Reps lost, and its their fault. I voted for the Republicans, but really, they didn't uphold their end of the bargain, didn't work hard to do what they promised, and stuck too much on social issued, influenced by the evangelical voter base. These things hurt them, and hopefully the Reps will learn their lesson from 06, and the Dems from 94. If they do, then both parties are headed for bettering America instead of working to divide us up for votes

You are correct; however, I believe the Democrats will overreach. It won't take 12 years for them to lose both Houses. I'd give it 4.
