are congos the same thing...I can't play either

Hit with the palm. Which means you should use your fingers as a sort of pivot to direct the palm more easily at the drum. Use your fingers when you require really fast rolls. Experiment with different parts of the drums, that would give you different sounds. And no one said you can't have both hands on the same drum.
