A strong common belief, mixed with excluding themselves from outside influence as much as possible, mixed with a very structured upbringing and they do at one point give young adults a chance to leave and view the outside world but if they choose the outside world then they are forbidden to return.

my husband and i traveled to pennsylvania this past spring and we visited several amish communities while we were there. i admire them so much, how they are so self sufficient on one another.their world revolves around church and their beliefs that god will protect them.i mean, they make their own clothes, don't have the modern conveniences that we all take for granted(like nintendo games,TV,electricity).they are such wonderful generous people.i actually purchased a handmade glider rocker for my oldest daughter that was pregnant at the time with our first grandchild.the man that made the rocker owned the shop we were in and was one of the most honest and considerate people i have ever met.my husband and i spent hours talking with him and hated to leave.needless to say, after that day i had a new respect for them and their wonderful way of life.i wish we were all as lucky to appreciate the things that we do have instead of dwelling on all the negative stuff!!!you are right, they are dynamic!!!ohhh, and i love the fact that they don't drive cars, they make their own buggies and their horses are their prize possessions.

It's like one big happy family, they pray together at prayer meetings (don't have churches but rent them for weddings and such), help each other, if they are having a hard time with finances they go to their bishop and get money. They enjoy simple things like Ice cream and auctions and feeding their faces. they do lots of things you would not think like play baseball, ice hockey, roller blade and go fishing.

They think in terms of what would benefit the society and not their individual selves. In turn, what is good for the society is good for the individual.

This is why our country is going to seed. We now all think as indoividuals, largely ignoring society, yet still expect to function well as a society. It's CRAZY.
