Rap just like any other genre of music could or could not influence children in good/bad ways.
Some things that could be good though are it teaches the kid that not everything is easy and gets handed to them. Real life situations and how the world isn't all about rainbows and puppy dogs.
Just as some bad things are the cussing but on the radio they don't curse nor do the edited cd's. The music videos say that it is ok for females to dress like a slut and have guys all over you, or telling guys that it's ok to "disrespect" females.
Everyone keeps saying that rap influences drug use and violence but I think it really depends more so on the environment and the people they hang out with more. I have listened to rap my whole life (now 19 years old) and have never once thought about touching drugs, nor about hurting anyone in any kind of way. I know a bunch of people that feel the same way too. And if people want to point fingers at the artists then what about the rock musicians that have sex with hundreds of different women and do drugs that I have never even heard of.

The lyrics are the most and main inportance of what influences children. Then you have the artist and the way the artist leads by example. Positive lyrics and positive character from artist will give you good influence on children and visa verse. Parents are the number 1 influence a child has.

Music influences everyone, it's up to us on whether we let it lead us astray. Why does it necessarily have to be rap music? Children watch the news with their parents. You get more graphic details from the news than you would listening to something. On the news today there was 3 shootings in Columbus, Ohio. Not all rap is bad. It's up to the parents of the children to educate them, to teach them right from wrong. I listened to rap as a child, does that mean I'm going to go take a gun and kill someone? Or go get high because some song suggested it?! Music is a way for someone to leave their troubles behind. Listen to Eminem -

Eminem]
See the problem is, I speak to suburban kids
who otherwise woulda never knew these words exist
Whose moms probably woulda never gave two squirts of piss
'til I created so much motherfuckin turbulence!
Straight out the tube, right into your living rooms I came
And kids flipped, when they knew I was produced by Dre
That's all it took, and they were instantly hooked right in
And they connected with me too because I looked like them
That's why they put my lyrics up under this microscope
Searchin with a fine tooth comb, it's like this rope
waitin to choke; tightenin around my throat
Watchin me while I write this, like I don't like this (Nope!)
All I hear is: lyrics, lyrics, constant controversy, sponsors working
round the clock to try to stop my concerts early, surely
Hip-Hop was never a problem in Harlem only in Boston
After it bothered the fathers of daughters startin to blossom
So now I'm catchin the flack from these activists when they raggin
Actin like I'm the first rapper to smack a ***** or say ******, ****!
Just look at me like I'm your closest pal
The posterchild, the motherfuckin spokesman now for.. White America!

Not saying he's the best one to listen to, but he's got a point. I see a lot worse on the news. Besides, it's all meant for entertainment. If you don't want your kids listening to rap, monitor what they listen to. Shouldn't we be more worried about 'bullying' at school rather than the music? That alone could cause violence. It's like backing a dog in a corner, eventually he'll snap.

Bad ways- a lot of cussing, a lot of anger, sex , drugs, and killing.

Good ways- Some possitive role models (Run DMC, Will Smith), some songs with possitive reaffirming messages( Mos Def,The Roots), great beats, gets children involved in music which is always good, some songs are very poetic (Tupac) even through all of the filth.

Being that I work for an indie record label I would have to say the positives can be rapping about change, love, and positive influences. The bad of course we hear in most music on the radio is demeaning to women and materialistic. If you want to check out an artist who isnt like that check out Unfadeable E.R.G. He does cuss but is not demeaning or materialistic. He is on itunes, bestbuy.com, cdbaby.com and unfadeablerecords.com

Good-Some good lyrical rap music may speak of cultures and messages regarding non violence.

Bad-This is usually the type of rap with no real lyrical content-same negative subjects such as dealing drugs, murder, who sports the biggest chain, sex, and bad labels on women.

Good Ways: If it's Christian, it speaks to their generation in a language they can understand and therefore convince them to live a better life-- a life for Christ (it worked for me)

Bad Ways: If it's NOT Christian (which most of it is), it can influence them to do drugs, have sex, beat people, disrespect.. etc.. many bad things..
