That is a good question, there are so many ways to answer.
Referring to fiction a superhero is technically someone with powers who fights crime and saves people, superman, spider-man, wonder woman ect. Characters without powers such as batman or green arrow are heroes but not technically super heroes (thou most people consider them to be). Then there is the hero-antihero debate, some say punisher is a hero, others say he is little better then a villain.
Referring to real life, technically there are no superheroes but heroes do exist. It is a phenomenon that dates back centuries and has seen a major serge recently with the development of real life superhero communities on line at sights like my space. Hear are some examples.

A Super Hero is a vigilante that fights crime, without getting paid and helps out the good guys.

breaking it down, super means beyond human (as in abilities), and hero means puts himself on the line for others.
Someone can be super and not a hero (a supervillain, for instance), and someone can be a hero while not possessing any abilities that are not human, like a fireman.
