George Washington,he was so popular at the time.The people would have allowed him to be King,Dictator or President for life.Instead he served his elected terms and voluntarily left.Most other men would not have had the character to leave.Just look around the world and see how remarkable that was.

Washington, because he was the only one to rise above faction and truly represent all the people. Lincoln comes in second for preserving the Union.

People liked him...yeah that makes a great president...not.

Ever? That would have to be Lincoln. He saved the Union and ended slavery.

In more modern times it would be FD Roosevelt who got us through the Depression and WW2.

FDR. During the depression he established the CC camps which gave a lot of work when it was needed. They built highways and bridges and such. He also signed in social security. A chicken in every pot. All we have to fear is fear itself. He is one of the reasons we are a world power now.
