The theory is that different rooms have different acoustic properties...So the equalizer compensates for these differences so you will hear what was the intended sound...You can also use it to change the balances to your preference...Let's say you think the vocals are too low you can up the vocals by boosting the mid-range (around 1KHz) till you like it, or you like to boost the drums you can up the bass (around 100 Hz).

to simplify this ?.EQ's can boost or cut frequencies, just like when u know its 2 much bass in a song what do u do u turn down the bass or if its to little u turn it up.same w/the Hi's or treble as we know it,but an EQ can also put sounds in the right frequncey range 20Hz-20kHz or use it 2 sculpt sound or 2 reduce nosies in audio.just depends what the situation is.EQing can b complicated, all u need to know is the basics, bass, mids(hi&low)and the hi's meaning knowing what they r what they do and how 2 use them.then when u get these down u can move on 2 the Filters of an EQ,low&hi shelf, notch andhi&low pass Filters, but thats another story.try this technique, its called sweeping, take a song u like, and slowly move anyone of the EQ nobs(lo,mids,hi's)and listen 2 how the sounds get cut in and out.
