The IELTS is much more oriented on the used english than the TOEFL.
It has 4 modules, listen, read, write and speak. All of the topics usually are related to everyday activities, therefore there is no general topic that you can prepare for (at least for the general module, I did not take the academic module).
The best preperation would be to do exactly the same, that you have to do during the IELTS. Listen to english CDs and DVDs (most DVDs come with the original sound track). Best take british english and american english ones. For writing: look for a pen pale in english (by email) and tell them about your life, likes and leisure activities.
Reading: The web is full of english sources, what should I say ... Reade recipies, stories, newspapers.
Speaking, depending on where you live the hardest task, but try to find someone.

The other issue is the methodology of the test itself. You are working under time pressure, got to write / check answers while listening. There are training courses for that, and books how to prepare for that.
Overall: I didn't find it too difficult.
