I am breastfeeding my third child. My seven week old baby refuses to take a bottle of expressed breastmilk from me, so I have to nurse her in public on occasion. Are there any products other than nursing shirts specifically made to assist in covering yourself while nursing, and what are your experiences with the products?

I've been using a blanket, but I just thought maybe there was a better way. The blanket falls down sometimes, and I just feel a little weird about putting a blanket over my baby's head.

My babe would not nurse with a blanket over his head. If you wear a tank top that you can pull down at the top, under a sweater or shirt you can pull up from the bottom, no skin is exposed. Of course, people around here NIP (nurse in public) all the time. If the baby needs to calm down and focus then i sometimes go to my car, or a dressing room.

Nursing in a sling takes practice, but is quite discreet.
I really dislike priducts like those "hooter hiders".
IMO nothing screams "trying to hide my BREASTFEEDING" like a big bib covering you and the babe.

If people make rude comments you can offer them a blanket for their heads, so they don't have to look!-)

Never never never nurse in a bathroom! ewwww! Who wants to eat their lunch where people poop?

I used a shawl that snaps around your neck. It worked really well and was light weight so it didn't smother my babies. If you try that, make sure you get a thin fabric and one that snaps for easy access. There are heavier ones on the market that are not practical

Another option is to use a sling. When the baby is in the sling, you can pull the side up and cover yourself if you lift your shirt from the bottom. My favorite sling is at www.babystyle.com. Look under the gear tab and it is called the new native baby carrier. This won't work for very long if you have big babies like mine were.

Some of the baby carriers have little cloth pieces to put over the top for breastfeeding. It worked when my son was real small but once he got to be moving around it no longer protected my privacy. I would just use a light weight blanket most of the time.

There are items similar to blankets made just for breastfeeding. I don't remember the name of the item, but it's like a shawl or blanket. They are not common these days, but they still exist. My wife just used a baby blanket or some similar item.

Babycenter.com has some products to help but if these don't work try moving to europe where you can nurse in public and no one bats an eyelash and you get a years maternity leave!

Nurse her in public, don't go to a bathroom like a previous person said. Would you eat lunch near a toilet? Anyways, I've seen women nurse in slings or under shawls. Good luck!

I am a breastfeeding mom and I just use a blanket when we are in public.

I use a Moby wrap or a storchenweigen wrap - they have lots of extra fabric to cover up , are comfy, and can make breastfeeding hands free :P

Try a lightweight blanket to cover yourself. Of try to go to a public restroom or somewhere semiprivate.
