How to restore art after it's damaged?

This is for research for the novel. Art as in artifacts, wood and metal scupltures, photographs, porcelain and clay vases and such, etc. Any ideas besides taking it to an art restoration department?

Amatuer restoration attempts usually further damage or destroy artworks.

Porcelain vases can't be restored.But if you want to restore pictures just go to a Walgreens and ask them to restore your picture.
