EPIDERAL!! They are the BEST! I had 2 children, and never had any problems with side effects... They have it available for a reason, and it really works... I'm glad you're staying open-minded! And good luck...

I also went into all of my labors with an open mind, which is a very good idea! My first I was induced with pitocin, and after 18 hours I was still only a 2. I tried a shot of narcotics which only made me throw up and didn't help at all with the pain, so I ended up with the epideral. With the 2nd and 3rd I was also induced but with a cytotec pill instead, I was able to endure the 2nd with no meds at all it was my best labor (only 6 hours). But with the third I was still at a 4 after 10 hours, and I really didn't want the epideral. (I hated the epideral, since it made me feel helpless and it was harder to recover.) I tried the narcotics again, and they really worked that time made me relax enough and I gave birth an hour later. From my experiences I've learned a couple of things, the main one is that giving birth is very much a mental experience. If you are told you aren't dialating fast enough and that it will be several more hours, you are more likely to just give up and agree to have the drugs. Don't give up, be strong! The other thing I've learned is you really need to allow your body to relax and allow the contractions to do their job...don't fight it. If you can take lamaze classes and really practice the relaxation techniques, they do work!

No medications are best. But, if the pain cannot be endured, do not hesitate to get an epidural. I don't think there is any significant risk to you or your baby if you have one. Having a baby can be as painful as having one of your fingers cut off. I am sure you will make the right decision and all will be fine.

I had my baby without medication for 2 different reasons- 1. It makes the baby groggy after they are born... 2. I couldnt stand the thought of having someone sticking a tube in my back..just whatever you do, dont let anyone talk you into getting one if that's not what you really want...take lamaze classes too..they will teach you techniques that will help you cope with labor..

I had a epidural and alot of people have one, I have 2 boys and they turned out fine, they was no side effects to them. The problem with the epidural though is that if you wait to long before you get it then you cant have one. If you start pushing and cant take the pain then it is to late, they cant give you an epidural then.

I believe in natural childbirth. I had my first two children with no meds, and they each weighed more than 9 lbs. I'm expecting my third next month, and plan on going natural.
I've done a lot of research and interviewed other women who have given birth both ways. Their answers were similar. You'll feel much better, and the baby will be more responsive. Recovery time is much quicker for you too.
The thought of having a needle shoved into my spine scared me more than letting my body do what it was made to do: give birth.
Good luck and congrats on the baby.

This is a personal gift/miracle that transends any selfish thought. To prepare is to deny the true reality of the blessings to come. Thoughts should be along the lines of sharing the most intimate things with all you loveand believing that this miracle will come to you in the best way. Love thyself will become Love.

I would not worry about side effects at all. Many women like to get an epidural but it does not always work (I am proof) and there is a time limit to get one. I had some demerol with my 2nd child to help me rest due to the fact I had no sleep. I liked it : )

Your mind.....
Take up yoga to maintain your flexibility and at the end of every class they usually incorporate meditation which psychologically and physically enhances the power of the brain.
This should be done in addition to the classes your community may have for new parents to be.
