-24 +8 +W =4
(-24 + 24)+(8 - 8) + W = 4 + 24 - 8
W = 20
Remember, this is a linear equation. You want to get the variable, W, on one side by itself. So you add or subtract from the left side to zero out the other numbers. And whatever you do on that side of the equation, you do to the other side.

a rectangularis 8 cm W and 12 cm L. Area for above rectangle is W * L 8cm * 12cm = 96cm ..(A) enlarge by increase the L & W by an equal amount in order to double area That means (L + x) (W + x) = 2(A) ...(2) Sub all given into (2) (12 + x)(8 + x) = 2 * 96 96 + 12x + 8x + x^2 = 192 x^2 + 20x - 96 = 0 (x + 24) (x - 4) = 0 x = -24 (reject) or 4 (accept) So the length and width is enlarge for 4cm The new length is 12+4 = 16cm The new width is 8+4 = 12cm

First you need to isolate the variable by getting everything else over to the other side.
w=24-8+4
w=______
think you can take it from there!
