I tend to be very professional and have a on-the-job mentality. Pretty much all business. As people always are messing around at work and gossip. I tend to stay away from it. Persectively, I think i am viewed as shrewd and unfriendly. Any way i can change this persona and still remain professional? Outside of work, i am completely different, very friendly and outspoken.

I think you're acting in the proper manner, however, there are times at work when you can relax and be more yourself. I'm sure you will be able to know to what degree you can let down your professional behavior.

For me, I have certain clients with whom I know I can be more casual with (actually it's better for business if I do). We joke and laugh and tease. Other clients I would never do that with.

In the office, I'm usually busier than everyone else (I have more responsibility and more absolute deadlines). I have to know when I can goof off a bit and when I can't. I can also be perceivd as unfriendly, but I get the job done and I leave work feeling satisfied that I've done well. I would never jeopardize the business because I felt like fooling around.

Anyhow, test the waters a little bit at work. Be a little more casual one day and see how it feels. Mess around a little bit (but definitely avoid the gossip!). I think that a little bit of "messing around" can take pressure off for a few minutes...making you more productive over the entire day.

A person that doesn't act differently at work with either:

a) not be at that job for very long, or
b) be a very boring person in real life.

You just can't do some things at work.

I was in a supervisor position in a warehouse and I told my drinking buddies, at work I'm your supvr. but after work we can drink and joke. At work I need you to keep busy. Also I would respond to insults from friends with more tolerance than from newbies who don't know me at all. My friends accepted it.
