Democrats were against Bolton because of his anti-UN rhetoric. He had railed at the UN for years and said it was a useless, USA hating bunch of left wing debaters. He even went so far as to comment that the UN's disbandment would not necessarily be a terrible blow to America.
I, as a Democrat, thought this guy should never be put in charge of the UN. Kinda like Strom Thurmond in charge of civil rights enforcement.
Now, that said, I've been surprised. He's done OK and his rhetoric in the past belies his tenure so far. He's worked well there and seen that perhaps the UN can be a forum for change and strong representation from the US delegate can make a difference. I hope the Democrats in the Senate (and remember, I am a yellow dog Democrat) approve his nomination. A little bipartisanship will help the US move ahead because the next 2 years will be interesting.
To quote Dick Cheney, "Why can't we all just get along?"

John Bolton was pardoned by the Reagen administration for running DEATH SQUADS in the Iran-Contra Affair.
So we do not like a former CIA Death Squad leader representing us in the United Nations.
We need men like him, just not in power or representing us to the rest of the WORLD.

They don't like him because he speaks the truth. He forced the North Koreans back to the negotiating table and he stands up to bullies like Chavez and Ahmadinijhad. The Democrats would much rather have someone like Andrew Young who wrings his hands and agrees with the French that the USA is a bad ally.

Does not posses the qualities of a diplomat, places personal ideology above fulfilling the duties of the job, and initiates conflict by inappropriate procedural actions.

Good luck with getting a factual response if by "factual" you mean supported by facts and not opinions.

They think that it shows a lack of respect to the U.N. and international opinion to appoint someone who has openly advocated the dissolution/subjugation of the U.N. as the U.N. ambassador. It makes us look like a bunch of as*holes.
